The Truth About Instagram’s New Map Feature.
What happened:
Some Instagram users noticed their posts and stories appearing on the platform’s new Map feature. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri stated that live location sharing requires mutual opt-in and is only visible to approved followers. However, some users reported appearing on the map without knowingly enabling the feature.
Why it matters:
Privacy advocates warn that even limited location data can enable stalking or harassment, reigniting debate over how platforms use geotagged information.

Lock down your location on Instagram with these quick steps, or watch my video here:
- For iPhone users: Settings → Instagram → Location → Turn off precise location → Turn off “always”
- For Android users: Settings → Apps → Instagram → Permissions → Location → Don't Allow
- On Instagram: Settings & Privacy → Search “story, live location” → Location sharing → Off
Note: This feature is still rolling out. If you can’t see it yet, it may not be available in your region.

Just a question, if I turn off the precise location on my iphone, does it impact things like “find my iPhone”? @heidiki_dt
Thank you for the question Heidi. Here is my advice: These are two very different settings. Turning off Precise Location for Instagram only affects the app, it won’t disable Find My iPhone, which uses Apple’s network (GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) to track your device.
